The Canisius hockey team concludes a busy week with a home-and-home series against “Battle of the Bridge” rival Niagara.
The Golden Griffins and Purple Eagles open their two-game set Thursday with a 7:35 p.m. contest at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter before the series moves to Lewiston Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup at Dwyer Arena.

Scouting Canisius
• The Griffs turn their focus to rival Niagara after opening the week with a road contest at RIT.
• Senior Dylan McLaughlin continues to pace the Canisius attack, posting team highs of seven goals, six assists and 13 points. McLaughlin has registered a point on exactly half of the Griffs’ goals scored this season (13-of-26).
• Fellow senior Jimmy Mazza is second on the squad’s scoring chart, chipping in two goals and six assists from his blueline position. Mazza has recorded a point in six of eight games played so far in 2018-19.
•Junior Nick Hutchison and sophomore Grant Meyer are tied for third in scoring with seven points apiece. Hutchison is tied with McLaughlin for the team lead with three power-play goals while Meyer
• Junior Blake Weyrick and sophomore Tucker Weppner have split time in goal for Canisius this season. Weyrick has led the tandem, recording a 2.80 goals against average and a .904 save percentage in 235 minutes of action.
•Canisius has thrived on the penalty kill of late, as the Griffs have killed off each of their last 24 shorthanded situations, spanning the last five contests.
Canisius Blanked by RIT in Mid-Week Tilt
• Canisius opened the week with a 2-0 setback at the hands of RIT Tuesday at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.
• Gabe Valenzuela and Will Calverley scored three minutes apart early in the second period and Logan Drackett stopped all 25 shots he faced to record his first collegiate shutout lead the Tigers to their third straight victory.
• Sophomore goaltender Blake Weyrick stopped 33 shots between the pipes for the Golden Griffins.
• RIT out-shot Canisius by a 35-25 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 17-8 edge during the first period.
• Tuesday’s contest served as the 76th meeting between Canisius and RIT. The Tigers extended their lead in the Division I era of the series to 23-15-1 with the victory.
• The shutout by the Tigers was their second straight against the Griffs as RIT posted a 2-0 victory over Canisius in their previous meeting on Jan. 19, 2018 at the Polisseni Center.
Scouting Niagara
• The Purple Eagles enter the home-and-home series against the Griffs after taking three-of-four points from Holy Cross last weekend at home as it recorded a 6-3 victory in the opener before playing to a 3-3 tie in the finale.
• Sophomores Justin Kendall (3g, 5a) and Eric Cooley (1g, 7a) have led a balanced Niagara offense that features 12 players with three or more points, as both players have registered eight points each through the Purple Eagles’ first 10 games.
• Junior Noah Delmas (2g, 5a) and freshman Dylan Mills (2g, 4a) have provided scoring depth for the Purple Eagles, ranking third and fourth on the team’s scoring chart with seven and six points, respectively.
• In goal, sophomore Brian Wilson has seen a majority of time for Niagara, starting eight of 10 games this season. Wilson, the Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month for October, has posted a .926 save percentage and a 2.12 goals against average in 481 minutes of action this season.
Canisius-Niagara Series Notes
• In a rivalry that began in 1997, Canisius enters their second home-and-home series of the season holding a 25-21-4 edge in the all-time series and a 24-17-4 advantage in Division I meetings.
• Canisius has dominated Niagara in recent meetings, holding an 15-1-1 record in their last 17 matchups dating back to the 2014-15 season. Canisius has won each of the last 12 contests against Niagara, the longest winning streak for either program during the series.
• The Griffs are 9-6-3 against the Purple Eagles at Dwyer Arena. Canisius is undefeated in its last seven games against Niagara in Lewiston, including a 2-1 triumph in their most recent meeting last February.
• Canisius holds an 12-8-1 record at home against Niagara. The Griffs posted a 2-1 victory in their most recent home contest against the Purple Eagles last February.
