The Canisius hockey team opens a busy week Tuesday when it travels to Atlantic Hockey Association rival RIT for a 7 p.m. contest at the Gene Polisseni Center.
The contest marks the first of three games in five days for the Golden Griffins as they face off against Battle of the Bridge foe Niagara in a home-and-home series on Thursday and Saturday.
Scouting Canisius
• The Griffs return their focus to conference play after wrapping up a home-and-home series with Clarkson last Saturday at Harborcenter.
• Senior Dylan McLaughlin continues to pace the Canisius attack, posting team highs with seven goals, six assists and 13 points. McLaughlin has registered a point on exactly half of the Griffs’ goals scored this season (13-of-26).
• Fellow senior Jimmy Mazza is second on the squad’s scoring chart, chipping in two goals and six assists from his blueline position. Mazza has recorded a point in six of seven games played thus far in 2018-19.
• Junior Nick Hutchison and sophomore Grant Meyer are tied for third in scoring with seven points apiece. Both Hutchison (1g, 2a) and Meyer (2a) recorded multiple points during Saturday’s matchup with the Golden Knights.
• Canisius has thrived on the penalty kill of late, as the Griffs have killed off each of their last 19 shorthanded situations, spanning the last four contests.
Canisius Rolls to 6-3 victory over Clarkson
• Canisius rattled off five unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit and cruise to a 6-3 victory over Clarkson in collegiate ice hockey action Saturday at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter.
• Senior Dylan McLaughlin tallied two goals and an assist while fellow senior Cameron Heath pitched a one goal and a personal-best three assists to pace the Golden Griffins (4-4-0), who recorded four of its six goals while on the power play.
• Junior Nick Hutchison, sophomore Austin Alger and freshman Lee Lapid also scored for Canisius.
• The Griffs trailed 2-0 less than eight minutes into the first before McLaughlin and Heath tied the game later in the first. Canisius came storming out of the gate in the second, tallying two goals in the opening 2:22 of the middle frame before adding another just past the midway point.
• Clarkson trimmed the Canisius advantage back to two late in the second, but McLaughlin closed out the scoring with a power-play tally in the third.
• Sophomore Tucker Weppner stopped 30-of-33 shots faced before being replaced in the final two minutes by backup netminder Jake Zurat, who joined the team earlier in the week. Zurat stopped all three shots he faced from the Golden Knights before the final buzzer.
Scouting RIT
• The Tigers head into Tuesday’s matchup coming off a sweep of visiting AIC last weekend at the Gene Polisseni Center, posting a 2-1 win in the opener and a 5-1 victory in the finale.
• Senior Abbott Girduckis has paced the Tigers attack in the early going, tallying five goals and six assists for a team-best 11 points.
• Senior Erik Brown, the program’s Division I leader in career goals with 58, leads the team with six markers this season.
• Sophomore Logan Drackett has taken control of the RIT net in the early going of the season, starting all nine games played by the Tigers. In 546 minutes of action, Drackett has posted a .926 save percentage and a 2.19 goals against average.
Canisius-RIT Series Notes
• In a series that dates back to the Griffs’ inaugural season of 1980-81, RIT holds a 52-21-2 advantage in 75 all-time meetings between the two schools. Canisius has played only Mercyhurst (88) more than the Tigers during the program’s history.
• Since RIT moved to Division I prior to the 2005-06 season, the Tigers own a 22-15-1 edge in the series. The series has been fairly balanced in recent matchups, with Canisius posting a 6-4-0 advantage over the last 10 contests.
• The Griffs hold an 11-8-0 record in true road contests against the Tigers during the Division I era of the series.
• Canisius is 4-2-0 in its six previous contests against RIT at the Gene Polisseni Center, including a split of their lone series last January that saw Canisius post 5-4 overtime victory in the opener before RIT rebounded for a 2-0 triumph the following night in the finale.
