CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Canisius athletic department, in conjunction with Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment, announced Friday that the College has agreed to a multi-year deal to keep its men’s basketball radio broadcasts exclusively on WECK-Radio Buffalo.
Again this season, all Canisius home and road men’s basketball games will air live on 1230-AM, 100.5-FM and 102.9-FM. Broadcasts will start 20 minutes in advance of tip-off with the M&T Bank Pregame Show. Canisius fans outside Western New York can hear the radio broadcast through Canisius’ official athletic department website, GoGriffs.com, through WECK-Radio Buffalo’s website at weckbuffalo.com or via the TuneIn app.
Canisius also announced on Friday that Andy Helwig, a senior communications studies major at the College, will serve as the team’s radio play-by-play voice for the 2018-19 season. Helwig, who served as the radio voice of the NY-Penn League’s Batavia Muckdogs last summer, had previously provided color commentary on Canisius’ men’s basketball radio broadcasts in addition to serving in the play-by-play role for other Canisius athletic events produced for ESPN3 and ESPN+. Helwig replaces Ben Wagner, who was the radio voice of the Griffs for three seasons before taking over radio play-by-play duties for the Toronto Blue Jays last spring.
The Griffs officially tip-off the 2018-19 season on Tuesday, Nov. 13, when the team travels to play at defending Patriot League champion Bucknell. Tipoff for that game is set for 7 p.m. Canisius will open the home portion of its schedule Saturday, Nov. 17, when the Blue and Gold plays host to Albany, with a start time set for 3:30 p.m.
