NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Purple Eagles went into another five-set stunner on Saturday, downing Marist, 3-2.

Match Summary
First Set

  • The Red Foxes had a 6-5 lead early in the first set, but the Purple Eagles scored five straight points, including two consecutive aces from Jaycie Roberts, to take the lead, 10-6.
  • Kills from Cameron Maris and Roberts extended Niagara’s lead, 16-10.
  • The Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run late in the set, taking a 24-16 lead over the Red Foxes. Niagara allowed Marist to score once more, but a kills from Jessica Streuer put the first set away for NU, 25-17.

Second Set

  • Marist scored five straight points to open the second set and take a 5-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • The Red Foxes led the Purple Eagles, 9-5, before a 3-0 run from Niagara which put the Purple Eagles down by only one point, 9-8.
  • Marist, however, remained in control of the set, scoring six straight to earn the 25-16 set two victory and tie the match, 1-1.

Third Set

  • The Purple Eagles led 5-1 in the third set, but the Red Foxes went on a 7-0 run to wrest the lead from NU, 8-5.
  • Marist went on a 5-0 run to extend its lead over the Purple Eagles, 14-7.
  • Three straight points from Niagara midway through the set left the Purple Eagles trailing by only one point, 18-17, but the Red Foxes answered with a 4-0 run to take a 22-17 lead.
  • Marist held onto its lead, taking the third set, 25-22, and a 2-1 match lead.

Fourth Set

  • Niagara took control of the fourth set early, going on a 6-0 run to get ahead of the Red Foxes, 8-2.
  • A 3-0 run from the Purple Eagles soon after, including kills from Leitch and Streuer, extended NU’s lead, 12-4.
  • The Red Foxes scored six straight points to cut Niagara’s lead, 21-19. The Purple Eagles got ahead, 24-20, before Marist went on a 3-0 run to come within one point of the lead, 24-23. Niagara, however, held steady and a kill from Hetterscheidt gave NU the 25-23 set four victory to force the match into a fifth and final set.

Fifth Set

  • A 4-0 run from the Purple Eagles early in the first set gave them a 6-1 lead over the Red Foxes.
  • Another 4-0 run, including kills from Roberts and Grace Hetterscheidt, extended Niagara’s lead, 12-5.
  • A kill from Hetterscheidt iced the Purple Eagles’ win, giving them a 15-7 set five victory.


Eagle’s Eye On…

  • Leitch led the Purple Eagles with 16 kills and 16.5 points.
  • Streuer recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a team-high 43 assists and a career-high 17 digs. She led the Purple Eagles in digs.
  • Roberts had her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 14 digs. She also had three service aces.
  • Hetterscheidt had a career-high five aces.
  • Mary Redl was just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs.
  • Emillie Wright added 14 digs for the Purple Eagles.
  • Hetterscheidt and Maris led the team in total blocks with four each.
