UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS


BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo women’s swimming and diving program had an impressive opening to their 2018-19 campaign, as they defeated Cornell in their annual exhibition against the Big Red. 
The Bulls opened up the day with a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as the relay team of Jillian LawtonAndrea ErnstKatelyn Burns and Catherine Schultheis collected the victory in the event with a time of 1:33.77.
In the 500 yard freestyle, the Bulls were also able to claim the top spots, finishing first and second respectively. Sophomore Brittney Beetcher collected the win, clocking in at 4:59.90 with freshman Julia Boswell coming in right behind her in second place in her first collegiate meet.
Sophomore Olivia Sapio had a good day for the Bulls, collecting a victory in the 100 IM event in a time of 58.11. Junior Anne Vitolins also raced hard in the event, collecting a third place finish in 1:00.27.
Buffalo was able to dominate in the 50 butterfly event, as UB took all top-three spots with Schultheis collecting her second victory of the day in 25.85. Jillian Lawton also had a good showing in the event, collecting second place with a time of 27:51.
In the 100 yard backstroke event, sophomore Nicole Roitenberg swam to victory with an impressive time of 56.61. Just behind her was junior Andrea Ernst who collected the second place finish. Roitenberg would also collect a victory in the 100 yard butterfly later in the meet with a time of 56.48 and in the 50 yard backstroke event with a time of 26:02.
Katelyn Burns swam to victory in the 100 yard freestyle with an impressive time of 50.92. Sophomore Antonia Naccarella placed second in the event, clocking in a time of 52.48. Burns also collected two more victories on the day, finishing first in the 200 yard freestyle event with a time of 1:52.58, and claiming the win in the 50 yard freestyle in 23:54.
In the second relay event of the day, the 400 yard medley, Buffalo swam to yet another victory as the relay team of Sapio, Roitenberg, Schultheis and junior Grace Baumer finished first with a time of 3:49.36. Finishing second in the event was the team of senior Maddy Jacumski, sophomore Sydnie Sovinsky, Vitolins and Ernst with a solid time of 3:54.66.
In the third relay event of the day, the 200 yard medley relay, the Buffalo team of Roitenberg, Sapio, Vitolins and Lawton took the first place spot, swimming to victory in a time of 1:45.76.
Buffalo claimed another win on the day in the 400 yard IM event with Beetcher swimming to victory with a time of 4:27.63.
Grace Baumer collected her first individual victory on the day in the 100 yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:04.96. Sophomore Jenna Krull finished just on her heels with a second place finish in a time of 1:05.50.
In the diving well, Buffalo’s Jae Sarkis collected a second place finish in the 3-meter dive in her first collegiate meet, collecting a score of 259.43. Coming in third in the event for the Bulls was junior Olivia Gosselin with a score of 231.83. Goesslin was able to collect the victory in the 1-meter dive event with an impressive score of 254.10.
The Bulls will return to the pool on October 26th as they head to Akron to take on the Zips. The meet will be broadcast nationally on ESPN 3.
