UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS


BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo women’s swimming and diving team will open up their 2017-18 campaign this weekend as they play host to Cornell University this Saturday at the Alumni Arena Natatorium. The competition kicks off at 12:00 PM. 
The Bulls will be looking to build off a strong close to last season as the team claimed third place overall at the MAC Championships, tying a program best finish at the event. Buffalo also finished the season with an unblemished 8-0 (4-0 MAC) record, the first unbeaten dual meet regular season in the programs history. In addition, Buffalo placed two athletes on the First Team All-MAC squad and four athletes on the Second Team All-MAC squad.
In the pool, the Bulls return sophomore Nicole Roitenberg who is poised to build off of her strong freshman campaign that saw her finish fourth at the MAC Championships in the 200 backstroke event with a season-best time of 1:58.81, earning her Second Team All-MAC recognition. Also returning for the Bulls is junior Andrea Ernstwho collected a silver medal in the MAC Championships 400 Freestyle Relay event, posting a season-best time of 3:19.06 on her way to Second Team All-MAC honors.  
In the diving well, Buffalo returns junior Olivia Gosselin, who collected a victory against Cornell in the 1-meter dive event last season. Additionally, sophomore Journi Northorp will look to build off of her impressive freshman season, as she posted a career-best score of 265.65 to take second place in the 3-meter dive event against Miami (OH) last year.
UB defeated Cornell in last year’s meet by a score of 165-131, collecting five individual victories, four relay victories and two victories in the diving well. Among the strong performers in the meet was sophomore Jillian Lawton, who collected her first collegiate victory in the 100 freestyle event, finishing in 53:02.
After this weekend, the Bulls will head to Akron to take on the Zips on October 26 at 5:00 pm. The meet will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN 3.
