BUFFALO, N.Y. — Alli DeLuca scored the game-winning goal in the first two minutes to lift Monmouth to a 2-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the loss, the Golden Griffins fell to 4-5-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in MAAC play while Hawks improved to 9-3-1 and 4-1-0 in league action.

Monmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 74 seconds into the contest when Lexie Palladino tapped the ball over to DeLuca, who booted the ball from the left side of the box into the goal to give Monmouth an early advantage.

The Hawks added to their margin in the 49th minute when Jessica Johnson dribbled the ball into the box before dishing it off to Maddie Gibson, who found the right corner of the net from 12 yards out.

Junior goalkeeper Alana Rossi was credited with seven saves for Canisius before being replaced by sophomore Bailey Fenwick-Miller in the 85th minute.

Head Coach Todd Clark‘s Postgame Comments
I was very pleased with the effort on the field today. With Monmouth being the number-one team in the conference and only allowing them to score two preventable goals, it showed a lot of effort. We’re looking forward to Saturday, where we will look to stay in the fight for a postseason berth against a solid Fairfield squad.”
