NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Niagara women’s volleyball team opened its home schedule on Saturday, falling to the Rider Broncs in straight sets.

Match Summary
First Set

  • The Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run early in the first set to take a 5-1 lead over the Broncs, but Rider answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead, 8-5.
  • The Broncs began to pull away, taking a 16-12 lead over the Purple Eagles. A service error from Rider and a kill from Jaycie Roberts put NU back within two points of the Broncs, 16-14.
  • Rider, however, held onto the lead and came away with the first set, 25-17.

Second Set

  • Niagara opened the second set with two straight kills from Caroline Leitch. Rider, however, quickly regrouped and got ahead of the Purple Eagles, 11-6.
  • Rider continued its momentum and led NU, 23-12, late in the set. A service error on the Broncs and an ace from Emillie Wright put the Purple Eagles within less than 10 points of Rider, 23-14, but the Broncs held on to take the second set, 25-15, and to take a 2-0 match lead.  

Third Set

  • The Purple Eagles started off strong in the third set, opening the set with kills from Leitch and Jessica Streuer. Niagara then went on a 3-0 run, kicked off by kills from Cameron Marisand Streuer, to take a 7-3 lead over the Broncs.
  • Niagara jumped out ahead of Rider, 10-6, but the Broncs went on a 4-0 run to tie the score, 10-10. Niagara got ahead once again, 15-13, but Rider came back to knot the score, 15-15.
  • A 3-0 run from the Broncs gave them their first lead of the set, 18-16. Another 3-0 run extended Rider’s lead, 21-17.
  • A kill from Leitch and an ace from Roberts put them back within view of the lead, 21-19, but the Broncs scored the next four points to take the set, 25-19, and to sweep the match.


Eagle’s Eye On…

  • Leitch led the Purple Eagles in kills with eight. Maris, Roberts and Paris each added five kills.
  • Streuer had a team-high 21 assists.
  • Wright led the team in digs with 14 and Streuer had 11 digs, tying her career-high.
  • Maris recorded one solo block.
