UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — A duo of University at Buffalo softball players were honored on Tuesday afternoon as the Mid-American Conference announced its postseason awards. Freshman Anna Aguon was named to the All-MAC First Team and All-Freshman Team while Jenelle Martinez earned All-MAC Second Team honors.
After her huge year at the plate, Aguon became just the second freshman in UB softball history to earn first team All-MAC honors as Alexis Curtiss also earned the recognition during her freshman campaign in 2012. Buffalo has also placed at least one freshman on the All-MAC Freshman Team in four straight seasons.
Aguon finished off her first season in the blue and white in impressive fashion as she posted a .359 batting average to go along with a team-high seven home runs, 36 runs scored and 35 RBI while leading the squad with a .633 slugging percentage and a .451 on base percentage. The Vancouver, WA native started 46 games in the outfield for the Bulls while notching six double and four triples to go along with a team-best 81 total bases.
Her 36 runs scored on the season rank second in school history and are the most in a single season by a freshman in program history. Her 35 RBI also rank fifth in school history and second most by a Buffalo freshman. On the year, the left fielder posted a team-high 13 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games while batting in the middle of the Bulls lineup all season long.
Martinez was honored with second team All-MAC honors for the first time in her Buffalo career after leading the Bulls offensive attack all season long. The second baseman posted a career-best .364 batting average to go along with six home runs, a team-high 37 RBI and 19 runs scored while recording a .550 slugging percentage and a .406 on base percentage. Her 37 RBI on the season rank fourth in program history for RBI in a single season.
The Cypress, CA backed up her strong freshman campaign that saw her earn All-Freshman Team honors with an even better season during her sophomore campaign, she became the ninth player in UB history to earn All-MAC Second Team honors.
The Bulls closed out their season with a 16-31 overall record while notching a 7-16 MAC mark as they more than doubled their total conference victories from a season ago.
