CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Canisius softball team earned a split with Siena at home on Tuesday. The Golden Griffins outscored the Saints in the first game by a score of 4-3 in eight innings, before falling 6-0, in the nightcap. The split moves the Saints to 16-22 overall and 11-5 in MAAC play, while the Griffs moved to 11-32 on the season, and 7-9 in conference action.
GAME ONE
Siena jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Jasmin Ortiz and an RBI single off the bat of Madysen Cossack in the top-half of the third. The Griffs got on the board in the home-half of that inning, when junior Molly Hennessy hit an RBI-single up the middle, to score fellow junior Denver Keller.
Freshman Erin Hufford followed up with an RBI-single to plate freshman Kara Paradowski, and tied the game, 3-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Hufford placed a bunt to the middle infield and quickly rounded first. Paradowski took notice and stole home as Hufford attempted to take second, notching the victory for the Griffs, 4-3.
Senior Erika Mackie earned the win in the circle for Canisius after she allowed three runs, on nine hits in eight innings. She also fanned three batters.
Paradowski went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in game one, while junior Destiny Holani, Hennessy and Hufford each had a base-knock in the win for Canisius.
GAME TWO
In the second game of the day the score remained 0-0 until the top of the sixth, when Siena’s Paige Hess hit a three run RBI-double down the left field line. The Saints added to their lead in the seventh inning when Brooke Taylor notched a two run RBI-double to left center. That run support was more than enough for Siena starter Maddie McMahon, who scattered three hits over seven innings and fanned seven en route to her seventh win of the season.
Canisius freshman Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle after she allowed six runs on three hits, while fanning two, in six innings of work. With the loss, Nicosia moves to 4-13 for the season. Mackie closed out the game, allowing one run on one hit in one inning.
The Griffs had three hits in the loss, with freshman Samantha Crane ending the game going 1-for-1 with a single and Dennis going 1-for-3 with a single as well. The Blue and Gold recorded seven hits for the day.
