CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS


BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Canisius softball team earned a pair of wins to sweep the doubleheader over MAAC foe Saint Peter’s Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins posted a 10-0 win in five innings in game one before coming back to earn the 7-1 victory in game two. With the wins, Canisius is now 7-26 overall and 3-3 in league play, while Saint Peter’s falls to 5-31 overall and 0-10 in conference action. 

In the first game, Canisius senior southpaw Erika Mackie tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout,  fanning four batters.

Canisius took an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Brittany SockwellErin HuffordLindsi DennisDestiny Holani, and Gianna Degaltini each drove in runs in the frame. The score would remain 6-0 until the visting-half of the fourth, when Canisius scored two times to take a 8-0 lead. In that frame, the key hit came from junior Denver Keller, who drove in a run with a sac-fly to center. Sophomore Sue Vi followed Keller with an RBI-double in the following inning.

Canisius had ten hits in the game one victory, with three Griffs talling a multi-hit game. Freshman Kara Paradowski went 2-for-3 and scored one run. Hufford also had two hits and scored once in the win for the Griffs.


In game two, freshman pitcher Emily Nicosia went the distance, giving up three hits and one run. At the plate, Sockwell ended the day by going 3-for-7, including her first career homerun to go along with a triple and two RBI.

Saint Peter’s scored first with an RBI double off the bat of Theamaris Ramierez in the home-half of the first. Canisius broke the game open with three runs in the third, thanks to RBI-singles by Dennis and Sockwell. Vi also tallied an RBI that inning, off of a sac-fly to center field. Dennis had a big bat in the sixth inning as well, hitting an RBI triple to put the visiting team up 7-1. Those runs were more than enough for Nicosia, who picked up her fourth win of the year in the circle for Canisius. 

Canisius pounded out 12 hits in the second game.

Game Notes
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Saint Peter’s by a 53-12 count.
• The Griffs have won 24 of the last 25 contests against the Peacocks.
• Sockwell’s homerun and triple in the first game were the first of her career.
• Dennis’s triple in the afternoon contest is her first as a Griff and fifth of the season for Canisius as a team.
• Altman leads the team with 18 RBI’s.
• The win in the circle for Mackie is the 36th in her career as a Griff.
