LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Niagara softball team split a doubleheader with Siena to open MAAC play on Saturday.

Game 1: Niagara 6, Siena 1

  • Niagara (8-19, 1-1 MAAC) took the early 1-0 lead over the Saints in the top of the first inning after an RBI single from Jerri Ann Orfano.
  • Siena (6-14, 1-1 MAAC) scored in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up, 1-1.
  • In the top of the fifth, with bases loaded, Orfano was walked, sending Taylor Moody home. Jennifer Timm then singled to right field to score Kendall Watkins and Heather Haberman. An RBI single from Margaret Vesneske gave the Purple Eagles a 5-1 lead over the Saints.
  • Niagara added on one more run in the top of the sixth; Kelsey Harrigan scored on an error by Siena’s center fielder.
  • The Purple Eagles held the Saints scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn a 6-1 win in their MAAC opener.
  • Harrigan and Vesneske led NU with two hits each.
  • Orfano and Timm both recorded a team-best two RBIs.
  • Harrigan had a team-high two runs scored.
  • Sierra Bertrand (4-6) earned the win in the circle, striking out two in 4.1 innings pitched. Emily Johnston earned the save.


Game 2: Siena 3, Niagara 0

  • The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. Siena held Niagara scoreless to come away with the game two victory.
  • Orfano and Vesneske each recorded one hit.
  • Harrigan had one stolen base.
  • In the circle, Karsen Cotton (3-7) fanned one in 5.1 innings pitched.
