UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS


DEKALB, I.L. — The University at Buffalo softball team (11-17, 3-3 MAC) dropped the final game of a three-game series on the road to Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon, 7-5. Catrell Robertson led the Bulls with two RBI in the loss to the Huskies.
After UB failed to score in the top of the first inning, the Huskies were able to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning as Sam Schmidt homered to center field to give the home team the 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Bulls exploded for three runs in the third inning to take the 3-1 lead. Leandra Jew started the rally with two outs in the inning as she doubled to left center field. After Anna Aguonand Danielle Lallos earned walks, Jenelle Martinez picked up an RBI as she earned a walk of her own to score Jew. Robertson then singled to left field to plate a pair of runs as Lallos and Aguon touched home.
NIU cut the UB lead to one, 3-2, in the bottom half of the third inning as Jenny Van Geertry homered to center field. Buffalo didn’t waste any time getting back the run in the top of the fourth inning as Taylor Scott led off the inning with a single down the left field line before Aguon plated Scott with a single through the left side of the infield to make the score 4-2 in favor of UB.
The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as they plated three runs to take the 5-4 lead.
Buffalo came right back in the fifth inning to tie the game, 5-5, as Martinez notched an infield single and Lace Smith singled to center field to score Martinez for her first RBI of the season.
The tie game didn’t last long, as the Huskies plated the game winning runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Bulls tried to get back into the game in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases on hits by Jew, Lallos and Martinez but the Huskies got out of the inning and held onto the 7-5 win.
Robertson led the Bulls with two RBI while the trio of Jew, Martinez and Smith each notched two hits in the loss. Aguon finished off her day going 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.
The Bulls will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon as they will welcome the Akron Zips to Nan Harvey Field for a midweek doubleheader. The first game of the day will start at 1:00 pm followed by the second game around 3:00 pm.
