UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team won their fifth straight match on Friday afternoon as the Bulls opened Mid-American Conference play with a 5-2 win over Toledo. The Rockets came into the match winners of nine of their last 10 matches. The Bulls improve to 8-3 on the season with the win.
Toledo won the doubles point as the Rockets grabbed the first two matches to go out to the early 1-0 lead. The third doubles match was halted with UB holding on to a slim 4-3 lead.
However, UB came back in singles, winning five of the six matches, all in straight sets. Junior Chantal Martinez Blanco came away with a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles, while senior Lolade Ogungbesan won her match at third singles, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Emel Abibula had a 6-1, 6-3 win at four, while junior Sanjana Sudhir won at five, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Junior Arianna Paules Aldrey had little trouble at sixth singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Toledo’s only singles victory came at two where Tanja Stojanovska was leading her match for the Bulls before she was forced to retire.
The Bulls will now begin a three-match MAC road trip beginning on Sunday afternoon at Eastern Michigan.
