WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) said American jobs and infrastructure should be the primary consideration in any plan to re-work the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Established in 1994, NAFTA is an arrangement between the United States, Canada & Mexico addressing trade issues between the three nations. This week the Administration sent Congress a plan to renegotiate NAFTA.
Congressman Higgins, a member of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade participated in a hearing on Modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Higgins, whose Western New York district borders Canada and includes four international crossings, is a vocal advocate in support of efforts to expand the interconnected economic relationship between the U.S. and Canada but he has publicly opposed NAFTA, the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and other flawed trade deals that open new doors to the outsourcing of American jobs.
Notable Western New York employers including: Trico, American Axle, Nabisco Niagara Falls, Carborundum and Buffalo Color are among the Western New York companies falling victim to bad trade policies since implementation of North American Free Trade Agreement.
