The Rochester Red Wings defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 5-3 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The paid attendance of 13,167 was the sixth largest baseball crowd in the history of Frontier Field. The series continues Wednesday with a doubleheader beginning at 4:35 p.m., with another $1 Wednesday and a Bark in the Park event.

The Wings jumped out to an early 2-0 in the second inning. Bengie Gonzalez hit an RBI single off Pawtucket starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to score Kennys Vargas. Two batters later, Zach Granite used his speed to leg out an infield single that drove in Niko Goodrum.

In the top of the third inning Jantzen Witte hit a two-run home run off of Wings starting pitcher Justin Haley to make the score 2-2.

Working on a pitch count as part of his rehab assignment from the Twins, Haley threw 47 pitches (32 strikes) over three innings. He gave up two earned runs, four hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

In the bottom of the fourth, Granite cashed in with a two-out, two-run RBI single to put the Wings ahead 4-2.

On a rehab assignment from Boston, Rodriguez pitched four innings for the PawSox. He threw 88 pitches (47 strikes), giving up four earned runs, four hits, five walks and five strikeouts.

Mitch Garver scored a run on a wild pitch by Red Sox relief pitcher Marcus Walden to make the score 5-2 Wings after five innings.

In relief, Nik Turley gave the Wings five scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Jake Reed pitched the ninth inning for the Red Wings, allowing a solo home run to Jhonny Peralta but striking out the final two batters.

The Red Wings and PawSox each had 7 hits.
