WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Brian Higgins announced the Department of Homeland Security is now accepting applications for grants through the Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Program.
“Federal fire grants play a major role in helping to keep our local firefighters and the neighborhoods they serve prepared and protected,” said Congressman Higgins. “I encourage local agencies to take this opportunity to apply and bring these federal resources home.”
Fire Prevention Safety Grants are intended to help local organizations address fire prevention and safety issues with the primary goal of reaching high-risk target groups including children, seniors and firefighters. Up to $34.5 million dollars will be made available for FP&S grants nationwide this year. FP&S is part of a larger Assistance to Firefighters program administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
Eligible applicants for FP&S grants include fire departments; national, regional, state, local, Native American tribal organizations; and nonprofit organizations that are recognized for their experience and expertise in fire prevention and safety programs.
FP&S grants support activities in two categories: (1) activities designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate incidences of death and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards (“Fire Prevention and Safety Activity”) and (2) research and development activities aimed at improving firefighter safety (“Firefighter Safety Research and Development Activity”).
All applications are submitted to DHS and go through a non-partisan, merit based review ranked by factors established by a panel of service professionals.
Applications for Fire Prevention & Safety Program grants must be received by 5 PM ET on Friday, May 19th, 2017.
