BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo has named Chantal Martinez Blanco and Brian Crimmins as its Athletes of the Week.
Sophomore Chantal Martinez Blanco went a perfect 3-0 this past weekend as the Bulls picked up a pair of victories. On Friday against Bowling Green, Martinez Blanco won her match at second singles easily 6-2, 6-2, help the Bulls to the 7-0 sweep of the Falcons. She continued her excellent play on Sunday in Buffalo’s 4-3 comeback win over Miami (OH). Martinez Blanco and her doubles partner Anna Savchenko won their match at second doubles, 6-2, and then Martinez Blanco clinched the match for the Bulls in singles action with a 7-5, 6-4 win at second singles against Anzhelika Shapovalova. Martinez Blanco was trailing 5-2 in the opening set before winning five straight games to aid her in the straight sets victory.
Brian Crimmins set a new school record at the highly competitive Bryan Clay Invite. His time of 3:46.33 in the 1500m broke the previous school record. The time also currently ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and 37th in the NCAA East.
