ROCKFORD, Ill. – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team picked up its first Mid-American Conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Bulls won at Northern Illinois, 4-3.

The Bulls took the doubles point as Anna Savchenko and Chantal Martinez Blanco won 6-2 at second doubles and Laura Holterbosch and Mercedes Losada Rubio won at third doubles, 6-3.  UB was also leading at first doubles when play was stopped.

UB won the first two singles matches to get out to a 3-0 lead in the contest as Losada Rubio won at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-0 and Emel Abibula won at third singles, 6-1, 6-4.  The Huskies tied it up though, winning singles contests at one, two, and five, leaving sixth singles to decide the match.

Sophomore Sanjana Sudhir lost her first set, but came back nicely, winning 6-3 in the second set before sweeping the third set 6-0, clinching the match for Buffalo.

“This was a good win against a solid NIU team,” said assistant coach Smaranda Stan.  “The doubles point was crucial and we came out with the right mindset from the start of the match.  We played very disciplined in singles and I believe that was the difference in the match.”

The Bulls return home to open a three-match homestand beginning on Friday afternoon when UB hosts Bowling Green at 1 p.m.
