KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker on Friday afternoon as Western Michigan came back for a 4-3 victory over the Bulls.
Western Michigan took the doubles point to open the day with victories at two and three. The Bulls won at first doubles as junior Tanja Stojanovska and senior Margarita Kotok claimed a 6-2 victory.
In singles play, the two teams split the six matches as the Bulls won the first three to take a 3-1 lead in the match. Stojanovska won at first singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory and Sanjana Sudhir followed that with a 6-0, 6-2 win at six. Sophomore Chantal Martinez Blanco then gave Buffalo its third point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at two. That score remained for a while as the following three matches all went three sets.
Tracy Kuhle won for Western Michigan at three and Denise Azcui overcame a first-set loss to freshman Anna Savchenko to win at five and tie the match up at 3-3. The final singles contest was played at four between sophomore Mercedes Losada Rubio and Barbare Eristavi. Losada Rubio won the first set for the Bulls, 6-2, before Eristavi won the second. The two players then found themselves in a tiebreaker in the third, which Eristavi won 7-5, clinching the match for the Broncos.
The Bulls remain on the road on Sunday when they play at Northern Illinois at 2 p.m.
