WILLIAMSVILLE, N.J. — As both teams resume conference competition, the Niagara Purple Eagles men’s and women’s tennis teams will go back on the road to face the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday, April 2 at Noon at the New Shrewsbury Racquet Club.
After accumulating two wins in a row, the Purple Eagles fell at home by a 6-1 result to St. Bonaventure on Mar. 26. The Purple Eagles will be return to conference play against the Hawks, their first match against a MAAC rival since falling by a 7-0 result to Quinnipiac on Feb. 18. Francis Nadeau was named MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on March 22. Nadeau went 2-1 in singles and doubles to help the Purple Eagles to a 2-1 record in three matches last week. In No. 3 singles, Nadeau defeated Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) Louis Tonon, 6-3, 6-2 and defeated Mercyhurst’s Joaquin Aguilera in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
The Monmouth men’s team has dropped four straight matches, including two losses to #3 Virginia on Mar. 15-16. Monmouth will be playing in their second MAAC match of the season, previously defeating Saint Peter’s 7-0 on Feb. 17. Since joining the MAAC in 2013, Monmouth has gone 3-0 against the Purple Eagles.
On the women’s side, Niagara fell 4-3 in their most recent home contest on Mar. 26 against St. Bonaventure. Stella Peisakhova and Sansriti Ranjan have played strong as of late for Niagara, collecting wins in two of their last three matches at first and fourth singles, respectively. The Purple Eagles are undefeated against the Hawks (3-0) since Monmouth joined the MAAC in 2013.
The Monmouth women’s tennis team will be playing in their second match of the spring season, falling to Marist on Mar. 26 by a score of 7-0. Adriana Armendariz has continued at first singles for the Hawks. Last year she was 14-6 at the position, and compiled an overall record of 15-7. Monmouth will be looking for their first win since Oct. 18, when they defeated Saint Peter’s 4-3.
