BUFFALO — Canisius junior pitcher Madi Weathers was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday by the conference office after she went 1-1 with a save and a 0.78 ERA in three appearances last week in Florida. This marks the second time this season the Westminster, California native has been honored as part of the league’s weekly awards program.

Weathers went the distance and recorded her second shutout of the season March 17, as the Golden Griffins defeated Cleveland State 3-0 on the first day of the Battle at the Beach event in Fort Myers, Fla. In that game, she allowed just three base hits, and only two Cleveland State base runners reached second base. She fanned seven in the win over the Vikings, her team-leading fifth victory in the circle this season.

Weathers picked up her MAAC-leading third save of the season March 18 after she tossed three scoreless innings in relief in the Blue and Gold’s a 2-1 win over Drexel. She gave up two hits to the Dragons in that game, and also struck out a batter. She was the Griffs’ tough-luck loser March 15, as she went the distance and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out three in the team’s 2-1 loss to FGCU in nine innings.

Canisius will close out the tournament-play portion of its 2017 schedule March 25-26 as the team travels to Maryland to take part in the Mount St. Mary’s Invite in Emmitsburg, Md. The Griffs (11-13) are scheduled to play Cornell and Mount St. Mary’s March 25 before closing out the weekend with a single-game against Morgan State March 26.
