PITTSBURGH — With a 3-0 lead to close the first period, the Buffalo Sabres stopped playing offense … and lost 4-3 in the end. It was a familiar scene for the Sabres who have seen early leads vanish in several games in the past couple weeks.

Ryan O’Reilly scored first for Buffalo at 6:19, assisted by Brian Gionta and Evander Kane. Gionta scored one for himself at 14:53, assisted by Matt Moulson. With 1:53 remaining in the first, Jack Eichel made it 3-0, assisted by Marcus Foligno.

Justin Schultz got Pittsburgh on the scoreboard at 7:45 of the second, assisted by Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin. Six minutes later, Malkin scored to bring the Penguins within one, assisted by Justin Schultz and Patric Hornqvist.

Jake Guentzel tied it at 3, with 3:46 remaining in the third period. The goal looked like it may have been directed in with a high stick, but a review apparently showed otherwise. Conor Sheary and Nick Bonino assisted on the tying goal. And Sheary put Pittsburgh up for good 50 seconds later, assisted by Schultz and Brian Dumoulin.

The loss gives Buffalo a 27-27-12 record for 66 points. They are five points out of a playoff spot with 16 games remaining in the regular season.
