YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University at Buffalo track and field team had a great first day at the 2017 Indoor Mid-American Conference Championships. The women are sitting in fourth place, while the men sit in second place behind Eastern Michigan. The Bulls took home the conference title in the men’s shot put, and Emma Siuciak broke two of her own school records: pentathlon and high jump.

After day one of the Mid-American Conference Championships, the men’s track and field team is in second place, behind Eastern Michigan by two points and ahead of Akron by 12 points. The Bulls had an outstanding performance at day one that resulted in a conference champion. Devon Patterson was a conference champion in the men’s shot put. Patterson hit an overall mark of 18.81m for his first conference title. Coming in second place was Ryan Cribbin took second with a distance of 18.08m. James Hanners did not go unnoticed, the junior from Buffalo hit a new personal best in the competition with a distance of 15.99m. Ryan Billian had an outstanding performance for the Bulls; taking home the silver in the long jump and making the finals in the 60H. The men’s distance medley team also earned themselves a medal at Friday’s competition. Justin Van Epps, Gyasi Morris, Thomas Meehan, and Craig Kaiser ran to a third place finish in the event with a time of 10:12.56. Barrett Kemp took fourth in the 5000m with a time of 14:31.07.

The women had an outstanding performance for the Bulls. Emma Siuciak took the silver in the pentathlon while also breaking a two school records that she had previously held herself. Siuciak had an overall score of 4003 to break her previous school record she set earlier this season. Her height of 1.79m in the high jump broke the previous school as well. The women’s distance medley team of Juliana Basla, Molly Tupta, Sydney March, and Morgan Mahoney ran to a fifth place finish with a time of 11:58.71. The women currently sit in fourth place after day one of competition.


The final day of the Mid-American Conference Championships begins Saturday at 10:00 am.
