BUFFALO — After becoming Buffalo State’s first swimming All-American in 40 years last season, Connor Mergler (E. Amherst/Williamsville North) has officially qualified to return to the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas on March 15-18.

Mergler became Buffalo State’s first swimming All-American since Michael Grabowski in 1976 when he accomplished the feat in three events a year ago, placing fourth in the 100 free, sixth in the 50 free and 16th in the 200 free.   The junior business major will compete in all three events against at this year’s championship meet.

Mergler successfully defended his SUNYAC titles in all three events at last week’s conference championships and was named the SUNYAC Male Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for the second-consecutive year.

Mergler will begin the NCAA meet with the 50 free on Wed., March 15.  He enters the meet ranked ninth in the event with a season-best time of 20.46 seconds.  He will compete in the 200 free on Thurs., March 16 and is currently ranked 22nd with a seed time of 1:39.84, and will close the meet with the 100 free on Sat., March 18, where he is ranked eighth with a season-best time of 44.79 seconds.

Buffalo State is seeking its first-even NCAA National Champion in swimming and diving.
