NIAGARA FALLS — Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster praised Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a statement released today but said a more suitable location could be found for a planned hotel than on Goat Island — as the governor has proposed.

Dyster said Cuomo has “done more for Niagara Falls than all of his predecessors combined,” adding that public input is welcome on the proposed lodge.

Dyster’s statement follows in its entirety:

“I have been contacted by many people regarding a proposal to possibly build a lodge on the east end of Goat Island. I have been assured by the Governor’s office, with whom I have been in regular contact, that a lodge is only a small part of Governor Cuomo’s ambitious plan to dramatically expand outdoor recreation opportunities at Niagara Falls State Park.

Goat Island is only one of several locations that could be considered as an option for a lodge. I am confident that we can find a location that residents and visitors alike will find more suitable.

Governor Cuomo has done more for Niagara Falls than all of his predecessors combined, including the decision to remove the Robert Moses Parkway and undertake the largest expansion of the park since Olmsted. I have been assured that the public’s input on where a lodge might be located will play a critical role in determining the final decision.

Throughout my career I have consistently taken a green and environmentally-conscious position on any given issue and will continue to do so”
