
BUFFALO — Senior Marissa Watroba won the women’s 200 breaststroke event in 2:22.94, while the women’s 400 free relay team of freshman Ashlyn Gilfillan, sophomore Marissa Dirienzo, senior Hannah Graesser and junior Rebecca Anthone won the 400 freestyle relay event in 3:30.64, to close day four of the 2017 MAAC Championships from the Burt Flickinger Center.
With the two victories on Saturday evening, the Griffs amassed a total of six MAAC Championship titles over the four-day event.
To close the Championship, Canisius ranked third in the women’s standings with 581 total points, while the men finished fourth with 420 total points.
The final day of competition was also highlighted by the selection of junior Travis Wright as the MAAC Men’s Most Outstanding Diver, while head diving coach Ian O’ Rourke was voted as the MAAC Diving Coach of the Year.
Sophomore Vivian Mroz placed second in the women’s one meter event Saturday with a score of 244.70, giving the Griffs diving program two second place finishes in the Championship, with Mroz also placing second in the women’s three meter Thursday. The men’s side saw two first place finishes, as Wright won both the one and three meter events with scores of 334.45 in the one meter and 357.75 in the three meter event.
Other women’s action from day four saw sophomore Cassie Brousseau finish second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:05.16, while Graesser placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 52.77 with Anthone and Gilfillan close behind in sixth and seventh respectively (52.91, 52.95).
On the men’s side, junior Greg Staebell swam to a third-place finish in the men’s 200 backstroke finishing in 1:50.31, with fewllow junior Dan Dirrigl getting eighth place in the men’s 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.58.
Also for the men was the 400-freestyle relay team of junior Tommy Kirch, sophomore Michael Shenal, senior Christian Westermeier and senior Cam MacDonald who finished in 3:06.85
The closing of the 2017 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championship marks the end of the 2016-17 season for the Canisius swim program, while three members of the diving program Mroz, Wright, and senior Brent Carbone will compete in the Zone A Diving Championships in March.
