The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline across the country is now $2.27 per gallon, down four cents from last week, but up 47 cents from one year ago. The New York State average is $2.50 per gallon, down two cents from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.07, according to AAA of Western and Central New York.

Locally, the price of gasoline in Buffalo and Rochester dropped a penny and two cents respectively. A gallon of gas in Buffalo now stands at $2.46, while in Rochester, the price is $2.44.

The national average price of gas continues to decline as U.S. oil production increases. Prices in much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast have followed the national average by dropping over the past week. Despite declines at the pump, New York remains on the list of top 10 most expensive markets in the country, ranking 8th for today’s current average price.

OPIS (Oil Price Information Service) says U.S. motorists have shifted into “park.” Year to date, 2017 gasoline demand is 7.7 percent lower than the same period last year, which is driving prices down. This is the largest decline in demand since 2014. About 11,000 U.S. gas stations are selling gas below $2.00 per gallon. Any local motorists headed to Ohio or Michigan will notice lower prices there. However, prices are expected to increase this spring, in April and May, as refineries flush the old gasoline out and replace it with new summer blend gasoline.
