A late 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter appeared to put Canisius women’s basketball team in position to win its second conference game of the year, however Iona finished the final 2:11 with a 7-1 run of its own, including a last second trey to win the contest, 55-52, on Friday afternoon.
With the game tied 52-52, and 14 seconds left on the clock, Marian Lizarazu found a open Alexis Lewis on the wing, as the sophomore hit a trey and lifted to the victory. With the loss Canisius drops to 2-10 and 1-2 in conference action, while the Gaels improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play.
Despite trailing for most the game, the Blue and Gold looked like its offense was going in the right direction in the fourth frame, cashing in a 10-0 run spanning 3:44, to go from being down 48-41 to leading 51-48.
However out of a timeout with a little over two minutes left in the game, Lizarazu hit a pair of free throw makes, while Karynda Dupree hit a layup and the dagger proved to be a game-winning 3-pointer from league-leading scorer, Lewis, to close out the contest.
Sara Hinriksdottir bounced back from a quiet performance against Cornell, with a 12 point game, shooting 50 percent from the field and taking down 7 rebounds. Tamara Miskovic also finished in double-digits, scoring a season-best 10 points, and chipping in five assists.
Matching Hinriskdottir’s effort, Saliah Serrette poured in 12 points, going 5-of-7 from the charity stripe, including a game-tying bucket in the games’ final minute.
Dupree and Lewis led the way for the Gaels offense, scoring 15 points each in the contest, and both took down seven rebounds apiece. Treyanna Clay also hit double-figures with 13 points and nine rebounds, flirting with the double-double.
Both offenses rebounded from an anemic first half shooting, as Canisius led in field goal percentage with a 40 percent mark, while Iona shot 35 percent from the field.
Iona won the battle of the glass 36-28, while the Blue and Gold had one less turnover than the Gaels, 18-17.
Canisius will spend the New Year on the road, finishing up its MAAC weekend with a game on Monday Jan. 2 at Manhattan. Game time is set for 2 p.m. The squad then heads home for its annual Kids Day on Jan. 5 against Marist. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
