NIAGARA FALLS — Welcoming its first passengers from a Canadian train around 10:30 this morning, the $43 million Amtrak station on Whirlpool Street is open for business.

No doubt, the new train station and custom house is a huge upgrade from the Amtrak station on Lockport Road that was used until Monday night, the new station still lacks some modern-day amenities one would expect from an international rail station — like a place to buy a cup of coffee. But officials are confident those amenities are soon-to-come. The City of Niagara Falls is looking for a tenant for 4,000 square feet of retail space, presumably including a place to buy a cup of coffee.

The new station was 30 years in the making — and another four months-plus between relative completion and actual use.
