AAA released a statement in response to City of Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren’s announcement that the red light camera traffic safety program will be ending Dec. 31.

AAA strongly supports traffic safety measures designed to reduce red light running. However, the sole purpose of red light cameras must be increased safety, not increased revenue. AAA believes that red light cameras have the potential to increase traffic safety when used responsibly with engineering measures, educational campaigns, and traditional law enforcement, provided that a thorough evaluation of such programs is regularly conducted and disclosed to the public. However, the best way to prevent serious crashes due to running red lights and to save lives is for people to change their driving habits. AAA is committed to improving the safety of all motorists and the public and looks forward to working with municipalities like Rochester on improving traffic safety.
