The Canisius women’s basketball team cut the Rider lead to just one, thanks to a Sarah Cooley 3-pointer, with 19 seconds left in the game, however the team’s comeback bid fell short, as the Blue and Gold lost, 71-70 at the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday. With the loss the Griffs fall to 1-5 on the year, while dropping to 0-1 in MAAC play.Meanwhile Rider improved to 4-2 and 1-0 in conference action.
Down by six points with 2:12 left, the Blue and Gold chiseled at the Broncs’ lead thanks to a late 8-3 run, capped by Cooley’s long-dsitance bucket.
A turnover by Stella Johnson, gave the Griffs the ball with 18 seconds left, with the opportunity to take the lead, but as Canisius worked the ball down low in the post, Sara Hinriksdottir was called for a travel and wouldn’t get the ball back until there was four seconds left, enough for a desperation trey that clanked off the iron.
The one-point loss spoiled what was a career-night for junior Saliah Serrette, who posted a gritty performance, notching 23-points and five rebounds, to lead the way for the Griffs. The Blue and Gold also had two other players hit double-figures as Hinriksdottir recorded 15 points, while Lauren D’Hont had 10 points.
The Blue and Gold bested Rider in a number of categories, outrebounding the Broncs 31-24 and posting a higher field goal percentage, 51 percent to Rider’s 45.3.
However Canisius turned the ball over 22 times, giving Rider ample possesions. Meanwhile the Broncs only coughed it up 16 times.
The Broncs were led by a trio of players as both Johnson and Kamila Hoskova posted 18 points apiece, while Julia Duggan recorded 10.
Canisius finishes up its MAAC-opening weekend with the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday. The game is set for 2 p.m. Canisius wraps up its four-game homestand with Buffalo, next Thursday. Its matchup against the crosstown rival begins at 7 p.m.
