BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo wrestling team has signed four wrestlers to National Letters of Intent, head coach John Stutzman announced Thursday. Matt Caccamise, Nick Palumbo, Noah Grover and Jake Lanning will join the Bulls in the fall of 2017.

Stutzman is pleased with this year’s early signing class.

“This is a great start to the recruiting season,” Stutzman said. “Boomer [Fechko] and Harry [Turner] did a good job getting out there and targeting guys that we really needed. Overall, this is a really good class as far as academically. These kids are really strong. Athletically, I think they are going to bring a lot to the table as far as work ethic and they’re going to help us continue to reach our goals.”

Caccamise wrestles for Wayne High School in Ontario, NY.  The 2016 New York State Champion at 113 lbs., he is projected to wrestle at 125 lbs. for the Bulls. An All-Greater Rochester team selection, Caccamise took first place at the 2016 NYS USAW Freestyle Championships.

“Anytime you can bring a state champion in, that’s phenomenal,” assistant coach Boomer Fechko said. “Matt will add great depth at 125/133 for us.”

Palumbo wrestles at 145 lbs. at Lenape Valley High School in New Jersey. He finished third in the state of New Jersey in 2016. He also has a strong national resume, placing third at the NHSCA Nationals in 2016 and third at the Junior Nationals in 2015. Palumbo had a record of 64-23 with 30 pins over his first three seasons. He is projected to wrestle at either 149 or 157 for the Bulls.

“Nick is a high placer in a very tough state,” Fechko said. “He’s won his whole life. He has some solid wins under his belt, so he’ll be a huge addition and a guy that could step in and make an impact right away.”

Grover hails from Warsaw, NY where he wrestles at 152 lbs. at Warsaw High School. He is projected to wrestle at 157 for the Bulls. The Section 5 standout had more than 50 victories last season and placed third in New York State.

“Noah is exactly what we’re looking for,” Fechko said. “A guy who works hard, trains hard and lives the right lifestyle. He has extremely high academics and fits the mold of our program very well.”

Lanning hails from Pontiac High School in Illinois where he wrestles at 170 lbs. He will likely wrestle at either 174 or 184 for the Bulls. Lanning is a two-time state placer, finishing third in 2015 and sixth in 2016. He also took first place at the 2014 Illinois Freestyle State Championships. In 2012, Lanning finished second at the World of Wrestling Tulsa Nationals in Oklahoma.

“Jake comes from one of the toughest states in the country,” Fechko said. “He has had solid performances, winning multiple matches at numerous national tournaments. Finding big guys can be tough sometimes, so he is a good fit for us.”

The Bulls will look to round out the recruiting class in the spring.
