INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Niagara University Department of Athletics had a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) seven percent higher than the NCAA Division I national average for the 2006-09 cohort, according to data released by the NCAA on Tuesday. Niagara had a cumulative GSR of 91 percent.

Seventeen of Niagara’s athletic programs – baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, hockey, lacrosse, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball – had a GSR equal to or above the national average. Ten of Niagara’s programs  – men’s cross country, women’s cross country/track and field, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and volleyball – had a perfect GSR of 100 percent.

The NCAA also released the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR). Niagara had an FGR of 71 percent, which is five percentage points higher than the national average of 66 percent.

The NCAA developed the GSR to more accurately measure the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR does not include students who leave an institution while academically eligible, but does include students who transfer into an institution after initially enrolling elsewhere. The FGR is currently the only measure to compare student-athletes with an institution’s general student body.
