The Canisius Golden Griffins officially open the 113th season in school history on Sunday when the team travels to play at nationally-ranked Kentucky. Game time is set for 6 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

The Canisius men’s basketball team opens the 113th season in program history this evening when the Golden Griffins play at No. 2/4 Kentucky. Canisius is under the direction of first-year head coach Reggie Witherspoon, who was named the 24th head coach in school history May 28. The Golden Griffins are 77-33 all-time in season openers (no records for 1913-14 and 1918-19 seasons).

The Griffs defeated Ryerson 99-95 in an exhibition game in Buffalo Nov. 7. Junior Kassius Robertson led Canisius with 32 points and seven rebounds. This marks the first time Canisius has played a nationally-ranked team since Dec. 22, 2012 when the team lost at No. 21 UNLV by the score of 89-74. This also marks the first time Canisius has opened the season against a nationally-ranked school since the start of the 1992-93 season, when Canisius played at No. 4 Duke. That was the first game on the Canisius bench for John Beilein, who is currently the head coach at Michigan.
