BUFFALO — The Canisius men’s soccer team, the No. 5 seed in the 2016 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship, starts its postseason play on Saturday night, when the team travels to play at No. 4 seed Marist. Kickoff in Poughkeepsie, New York is set for 7 p.m. The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the MAAC semifinal round, which will be hosted by Quinnipiac Nov. 11.

Canisius officially earned a berth into the 2016 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship with a tie at Niagara and Iona’s loss at Manhattan on Wednesday night. The Griffs finished the 2016 MAAC slate with 15 points, which tied the team with Monmouth for fifth-place in the league’s standings. By virtue of Canisius’ 2-1 win over Monmouth Oct. 22, the Blue and Gold was awarded the fifth-seed. This marks just the second time in program history where the Griffs have earned a postseason bid. Canisius also qualified for the 1996 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship, which was played at Loyola Maryland in Baltimore. Prior to this season, the last five postseason appearances for Canisius came when the MAAC hosted the men’s soccer tournament at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

With a win on Saturday, the Canisius men’s soccer senior Class of 2016 will earn the distinction of being the winningest class in program history. The Class of 2015 won 32 games between 2012-15. This year’s senior class has 32 wins as well after defeating Fairfield at home Oct. 29. The Griffs’ next win this year will be the team’s ninth of the season. The program has only won nine games in two previous years – 1980 and 2014.

Canisius enters Saturday’s game at Marist on a five-game unbeaten streak of 3-0-2, which is the Griffs’ longest unbeaten streak of the season and it marks the second-straight year where the team went unbeaten in its final five regular-season games of the year.
