NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – For the second time this season, the Niagara Purple Eagles swept rival Canisius in a dominating performance on Wednesday night.

Nicole Matheis and Alex Stone combined for 10 of Niagara’s 13 kills, while Alexis Gray added 11 assists as the Purple Eagles won the first set, 25-17. After trailing 4-1, NU soared into the lead to eventually build a 20-12 advantage. Niagara held its composure in rallying to take the second set which featured eight ties and six lead changes. Niagara scored four straight points to take a 23-21 lead. A kill by Madison May closed out the set at 25-23. The Purple Eagles once again battled back from an early deficit. Trailing 12-7, NU tied the set at 13-13 and regained the lead on the next serve. NU’s lead was trimmed to 16-15 when a kill by Stone, one of her six in the set, put Niagara up by two points as it would be the closet Canisius would get.

Niagara earned one point in the Battle of the Bridge competition. The Purple Eagles trail 6-2, with both points coming from volleyball.

The Purple Eagles conclude their home schedule with matches versus Quinnipiac on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday.
