BUFFALO — The Canisius College hockey team will face rival RIT this weekend in a home-and-home series, beginning Friday at 7:35 p.m. in KeyBank Rink at the HARBORCENTER.  The team will then travel to the Gene Polisseni Center for a 7:05 p.m puck drop on Saturday. The Griffs are 2-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, after being swept by No. 19 Penn State last weekend.

Canisius currently ranks fifth in the Atlantic Hockey Conference with a 1-0-1 record in league play, going 2-5-1 overall. The Griffs are led offensively by sophomore Felix Chamberland and juinor Ryan Schmelzer, who are tied with a team-high five points. Chamberland is currently tied for fifth in nation in power-play goals, with three. Senior goaltender Charles Williams owns a 2-2-1 overall record and is 19th in the nation in save percentage at .924. The Blue and Gold rank 14th in the country in power-play percentage at 20.00 percent (7-for-35).

The Golden Griffins traveled to No. 19 Penn State last weekend going 0-2-0 against the Nittany Lions from Pegula Ice Arena. Freshman goaltender Daniel Urbani stopped 61 shots, including 29 in the first period, in a 4-1 loss to the Nittany Lions on Friday. Freshman Jesse Pereira scored the first two goals of his collegiate career  in the Griffs 4-2 loss on Saturday night. The Blue and Gold looked to have had a game-tying goal late in Saturday’s 4-2 loss (scored by Dylan McLaughlin), but it was nullified by an offside call. Williams stopped 43 shots Saturday, including 15 in the second and third periods, falling to 2-2-1 on the year.

In a series that dates back to the Griffs’ inaugural season of 1980-81, RIT holds a 51-16-2 advantage in 69 all-time meetings between the two schools. Last season, the teams split their series, with the Blue and Gold winning the first matchup 6-3, while the Tigers took game two 4-3.
