BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo women’s soccer team (7-8-5, 4-4-3 MAC) saw their 2016 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon in the Mid-American Conference quarterfinals at Central Michigan as they fell 1-0. Seven UB seniors played in their final match on Sunday as they helped lead UB to 40 wins over their impressive careers.

The Chippewas took the lead on the first shot of the match in the third minute as MAC-leading scorer Alexis Pelafas buried her 16th goal of the season, beating Laura Dougall to the lower left corner. In the ninth minute, Central Michigan almost made it 2-0 but Eliza Van de Kerkhove saw her hard shot ring off the cross bar and bounce out of harms way. The Bulls notched their first shot on goal of the match in the 25th minute as Andrea Niper ripped a shot that was stopped by Kristen Knutson. Four minutes later, Carissima Cutrona saw her attempt sail just over the net. After Julia Benati saw her shot go high in the 36th minute, Central Michigan’s Alexis Pelafas had a header go just wide of the goal.

The Chippewas had two great chances in the first minute of the second half as Madison Costner saw both of her attempts saved by Laura Dougall. Nicole Gerritz had back-to-back shots blocked away and cleared out of trouble in the 56th minute. In the 61st minute, Moira Petrie saw her dangerous chance saved by the CMU keeper. Carissima Cutrona had a chance to tie the match in the 83rd minute but Knutson made a nice save. The Bulls final scoring chance of the match came in the 89th minute as Moira Petrie ripped a hard shot that was saved by the keeper to preserve the clean sheet.

The loss ends the season for seven UB seniors, Andrea Niper, Angel Hart, Cassie Betancourt, Isabella Borini, Celina Carrero, Dana Lytle and Ashley Evans.
