KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team will send three athletes to their respective flight Championships on Sunday afternoon after strong performances on Saturday in day two of the Mid-American Conference Invitational at West Hill Athletic Club. Vidit Vaghela, Villhelm Fridell and Ethan Nittolo will all play for a championship in their flights on Sunday.
Sophomore Ethan Nittolo was dominant on Saturday afternoon as he handed Erich Marbach from Northern Illinois the 7-5, 6-3 defeat. In his second round matchup, Nittolo downed Billy Heckman from Western Michigan, 6-4, 7-6 to move onto the championship match against Nick Schnoble from Western Michigan.
Transfer Vidit Vaghela finished off his first victory of the day against Matej Svjetlicic from Western Michigan by the score of 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. Vaghela battled through a tough second match and picked up a 6-2, 1-6, 12-10 victory against Nemanja Guzina from Ball State. Freshman Villhelm Fridell was the third UB player to qualify for the flight championship as he downed Tom Hjertonsson from Northern Illinois 6-0, 1-6, 10-7 and Eric Olivarez from Western Michigan, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Freshman Filip Grbic will play in the third place match on Sunday after collecting a 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 victory in his opening match against Matt Hamilton from Western Michigan. Grbic lost his second match of the day in a hard fought battle, 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 to Thomas Caputo from Binghamton.
Petr Vodak and Konstantinos Tsakiris were both able to qualify for the consolation finals after each dropping their opening matches of day. Vodak earned a dominant 6-4, 6-3 win over Tiago Lourenco from Binghamton and Tsakiris downed Amerigo Valenti from Binghamton by the score of 6-0, 6-1 to earn a trip to the finals.
The MAC Invitational will conclude on Sunday morning with one round of singles action starting at 8:30 am at West Hill Athletic Club.
