Canisius head men’s cross country coach Nate Huckle was named the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, it was announced Saturday night at the conference’s annual postseason awards banquet at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida. This marks the third time in the last four years where Huckle has been honored by his coaching peers in the MAAC.

Huckle’s squad finished second at the 2016 MAAC Championship on Saturday, which is the Golden Griffins’ four-straight top-five finish at the league’s championship event. During the 2016 season, the Canisius men won the annual Little Three Championship and the Canisius Alumni Classic while placing fifth at the National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Indiana.

The MAAC also announced the 2016 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Teams on Saturday night. Five Canisius male runners were recognized for their work in the classroom, while eight members of the Canisius women’s cross country team were recognized for their academic efforts. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must hold a GPA of 3.20 or higher and have completed two semesters at their school.

On the men’s side, seniors Xavier Sauvageau, Galen Snyder and A.J. Stuver were named to the league’s top academic unit, where they were joined by Canisius junior David Carey and sophomore Patrick Crowley. Canisius seniors Haley Keene, Catherine Niederpruem, Anna Phillips and Macey Walker earned MAAC All-Academic accolades, and they were joined on the all-star unit by juniors Mary Manzari, Carlin Sullivan, Haylie Virginia and Rachael Weissenburg.

Canisius sophomore Siobhan Quinn won the 2016 MAAC Women’s Cross Country Championship race on Saturday, the program’s first MAAC individual champion since 1997. The women’s team took fourth in the field, while the men’s team earned a second-place finish.
