While gas prices in Buffalo remain unchanged — and Rochester is up just 2 cents per gallon — this weeks marks somewhat of a milestone in that prices are higher today than they were a year ago. It’s the first time that’s happened since July, 2014.

The cost of a gallon of unleaded fuel in Buffalo is $2.32, while Rochester gas stations are charging $2.33 per gallon, on average. Statewide, the price is $2.37. Nationally, it’s $2.22.

As Tom Kloza, the head of OPIS (Oil Price Information Service) explains, “the gasoline eclipse took place over the weekend.” The national average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline passed levels from a year ago for the first time since July, 2014. Now that the streak, which lasted 832 days, is over, Kloza expects the gap to grow further. Consumers will realize they are spending more than one year ago for gasoline and may see this as less of a bargain at the pump as we enter the holiday season, which could affect retail spending.
