PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Freshman Hao Sheng Koay had an impressive day on Saturday as he picked up a pair of singles victories to move into the round of 16 at the ITA Northeast Regionals.  Koay also joined teammate Ethan Nittolo in doubles and moved into the round of 16 there as well.

After receiving a first round bye on Friday, Koay won his first match on Saturday 6-1, 7-5 over Brad Orban of Fairfield.  He then moved into the round of 16 with a straight sets win over Kei Ezaka of Quinnipiac, 6-4, 7-5.  He will now be matched up with William Matheson of Columbia with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake.

The other three UB players that made it into the round of 64 all fell on Saturday as Villhelm Fridell lost his match, 7-6, 6-1, while Vidit Vaghela fell, 6-2, 6-2.  Nittolo also lost his singles match, unable to hold on to a first set win.

In doubles, Nittolo and Koay continued their strong run that began in the qualifying draw.  The duo defeated Lukas Zvikas and Richard Rangga of NJIT, 8-5 to move into the round of 16 where they will play the ranked squad of Brian Yeung and Michael Peters from Harvard for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Filip Gribic and Fridell lost their doubles match in a tight one, 8-7, while Vaghela and Petr Vodak lost their match, 8-4.


Action will continue Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles, followed by singles action.
