BUFFALO — Monmouth freshman Madie Gibson scored in the sixth minute and that’s all the Hawks needed as Canisius fell 3-0 at home Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Golden Griffins to 7-8-0 overall and 5-4-0 in MAAC play.

Despite the loss, Canisius clinched a berth in the 2016 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship with Manhattan’s loss to Siena and Niagara falling to Iona. This will mark the first time Canisius has qualified for the conference’s post-season since 2014. Final seeding and first round match-ups will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season, which is set for Wednesday Oct. 26.

The Hawks second goal would come in the 65th minute as Monmouth senior Julie Spracklin was taken down inside the box by a Canisius defender, drawing a penalty kick. Spracklin would convert on the kick in the upper right corner.

Monmouth’s third, and final, goal came just over a minute late in the 66th minute on a give-and-go from Gibson to senior Alexis McTamney. McTamney would chip the ball over the head of diving Griffs freshman goalkeeper Alana Rossi and across the goal line. Rossi would go on to stop four more shots before being replaced for the final 7:39 minutes by freshman Meaghan O’Neil, who saw her first collegiate action. O’Neil would record a save in the 86th minute.

Canisius controlled most of the match in the first half, but that would change in the second stanza. Monmouth would pepper 18 total shots towards the frame with nine going on goal. Whereas, the Griffs only got off four balls towards the net, with only three listing as shots on goal.

Canisius will stay home to end the regular season Wednesday as they face Siena at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 4 p.m., and that game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
