NIAGARA UNIV. — The Niagara women’s soccer team battled to an exciting win against conference opponent Fairfield on Saturday.

The first half of the match was a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Stags. Shawnique Samuels, Kori Thorne, Eva Bachmann and Kelsey Lafferty each took one shot for Niagara in the first half. Lafferty had Niagara’s only shot on goal. The Purple Eagles came out strong offensively in the second period, taking five shots within less than 20 minutes.
Ortiz scored the goal for Niagara in the 69th minute. Bachmann passed her the ball and Ortiz split the defenders, scoring one on one with the keeper. Prior to the start of the game, Niagara honored its six graduating seniors: Amanda Gallo, Ortiz, Emily Phillips, both Samuels sisters and Thorne.

The Purple Eagles play their final road game of the regular season on Oct. 22 at Iona. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Niagara closes out the regular season at home, hosting Marist on Oct. 26 at 3:00 p.m.
