Junior diver Travis Wright won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and sophomore Cassie Brousseau took first in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events as the Canisius swimming and diving programs officially opened the 2016-17 campaign Friday afternoon at Marist in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The Red Foxes posted a 168-130 win over the Golden Griffins in the men’s competition, and the host school scored a 169-126 win in the women’s event.

Wright, the defending MAAC Diving champion, earned the win in the 1-meter event with a score of 320.10, and then scored 306.07 to secure the top spot in the 3-meter.

Brousseau started off her second season as a Griff with a strong effort, winning two events and helping the 200-medley relay team place second. She won the 100-backstroke with a time of 1:00.78, and then she scored top spot in the 200-backstroke with a 2:11.46. Junior Rebecca Anthone also earned a victory on the day, as she paced the field in the 200-free with a time of 1:58.71.

In the men’s race, junior Greg Staebell won the 100-backstroke with a time of 53.40, while senior Wyatt Sintay took first in the 100-breaststroke with his time of 1:01.05. Junior Dan Dirrigl won the 200-butterfly and also scored a second-lace finish in the 100-butterfly.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action Oct. 22, when the Griffs take part in the University of Rochester Invite.
