Iona scored twice in the game’s first half and then added another goal in the game’s closing minutes en route to a 3-0 victory over Canisius Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, New York. The win moves the Gaels to 3-10-0 overall and 2-3-0 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 5-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference action.

Iona got on the board first in the game’s 22nd minute when Marcos Nunez was able to take a feed from teammate Daniel Huertas and slide the ball past the outstretched reach of Canisius goalkeeper Bryce Tramuta for his third marker of the season. The Gaels took a 2-0 lead in the 39th minute on an unassisted tally by Killian Colombie. Colombie was able to collect his own rebound, which came off a shot that hit the crossbar, to score his fourth goal of the year.

In the 88th minute, Huertas, Iona’s leading scorer, capped the contest with a goal from 30-yards out. The assist on that goal was credited to Iona’s Matias Correa.

Iona outshot Canisius 21-7, which included a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Iona keeper Julian Petrello was credited with three saves, while Tramuta, who was making his first career start for the Blue and Gold, made seven stops in the loss.

Canisius returns home to play Saint Peter’s on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
