BUFFALO — The Mid-American Conference released its preseason wrestling rankings on Friday and the Bulls are ranked tied for sixth ahead of the 2016-17 season. Buffalo also has three wrestlers in the individual rankings.

The Bulls are coming off their best season in over 10 years. UB finished 10-9 overall and 2-6 in the MAC. It was their most wins since the 2003-04 season.

Among the individual rankings, Jake Gunning leads the way as the top-ranked wrestler in the heavyweight division. Gunning, a sophomore, was 18-12 overall and 12-7 in duals last season. He advanced to the title match of the 2016 MAC Championships before falling to top-seeded Blaize Cabell.

Joe Ariola and James Benjamin rank fourth at 184 and 197-lbs., respectively. Ariola went 14-17 overall and 9-13 in duals last season. He advanced to the NCAA Championships where he scored a huge upset over third-ranked Victory Avery of Edinboro. Benjamin went 17-15 overall and 11-8 in duals last season.

The 2016-17 season opens on November 13 when the Bulls compete at the Journeyman Classic in Albany.
