Canisius senior Thomas Teupen was named the MAAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after he helped lead the Golden Griffins to a pair of non-conference road wins last weekend. Teupen is the first Canisius player to be honored by the conference office this season.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound defender scored the Griffs’ only goal Sept. 16, as the Blue and Gold defeated long-time rival St. Bonaventure 1-0 at the Demske Sports Complex. That goal, which came in the game’s sixth minute, was Teupen’s second of the season, and it also stands as his second game-winning goal in just over a week. Teupen also helped fuel a defensive effort in both of the team’s victories last week, as Canisius evened its 2016 record to 4-4-0 with a 2-1 overtime win at Central Connecticut State Sept. 18.

Canisius opens MAAC play on Saturday, Sept. 24, when the team welcomes defending MAAC champion Rider to the Demske Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN3.
