Canisius senior Thomas Teupen scored the game’s only goal in the 6th minute and redshirt-junior goalkeeper Marco Trivellato made three saves en route to his second shutout of the season as the host Golden Griffins defeated St. Bonaventure 1-0 Friday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The win moves Canisius to 3-4-0 on the year, while the Bonnies slipped to 0-5-1 with the loss.

Teupen put Canisius ahead for good just 5:33 into the contest on a header that beat St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Alex Olday’s out-stretched reach and fell into the back of the goal. Teupen’s goal came off an assist from redshirt-sophomore Bjarki Benediktsson, who started the scoring play off a corner kick, one of eight Canisius corner kicks on the night. That assist was the first for Benediktsson in a Canisius uniform.

The Griffs outshot the Bonnies by a 20-6 clip on the night. Olday, who was making his first career start in goal for St. Bonaventure, was credited with six saves.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane’s said, “I was very pleased with the way we played in the first half. It was good to score that goal early in the game. We had a few more quality chances after we got the first goal but we were unable to finish. As a team, we need to learn how to close games out earlier.”

“Give St. Bonaventure credit, they played hard and with more intensity after the half and made it much more difficult for us in the second half,” he added

Canisius will close out the non-conference portion of the 2016 schedule Sunday when the team travels to play at Central Connecticut State. Kickoff in New Britain, Conn., is set for noon.
